A Few Things That This Victorian Porch Builder does differently–

In order to make a porch stable and long lasting there are a few things that a great Victorian porch builder should do differently.

The foundation is the critical first element that any porch company should put some thought into. We use helical footings for all of our decks and porches for one good reason. Stability.

When you dig a footing you have no idea what the soil beneath that footing will support. The house could have been built in a swamp. There could have been a well where the corner footing is being placed. Since you have a better engineered option it’s not worth the risk. Helical piles are put in with a machine that actually measures torque and when it reaches 1500-1800 psi, they will support between 8,000-16,000 lbs depending on the helical type.

The substructure of the porch is a heavyweight pressure treated with sealed end cuts. Since that area will get wet from time to time it only makes sense for it to be weather resistant lumber.

The decking is an architectural grade of full width Western Red Cedar.

Victorian Porch Builders – Materials Upgrade

The Decking is spaced full width architectural grade 2×6 Western Red Cedar. We used this lumber rather than porch boards for durability. Porch boards usually have a 10 year life span when open to the northwest. This allows the moisture to run through and dry between rains.

The support posts are FOHC (Free of Heart Center) materials to avoid twisting and large cracks. It is a much more stable grain to work with.

Our builders prefinished all the materials and sealed all the end cuts as they built the porch. . The marine ply was used for gingerbread to ensure a long life, and plenty of western red cedar will help it age gracefully.
